Dense fog on LHHT
Wolf Rocks Overlook

Wolf Rocks – Linn Run State Park

At the end of January we stayed in a cabin at Linn Run State Park. This was my third visit, I was very excited to be able to explore the area. On previous visits I quickly realized that Linn Run connected Forbes State Forest. Always a place that turns me backwards for some reason. But this time knowing I had a cabin waiting for me it was easy to go explore. I want to get the lay of the land. That’s my favorite thing about visiting a place over and over. I was at Wolf Rocks once before. That day was sunny and not a cloud in the sky. Made for a nice view but not so nice pictures. This time we woke up early to get to the trail head before sunrise. At the top of the mountain where Linn Run meets Forbes State Forest, the fog was so thick I could barely see. There was a thin layer of ice on the road as well. We made it to the trail head but couldn’t see in-front of us to figure out where we were walking, headlamp and all. As big of a sport as my girlfriend usually is, she convinced me to make our way to back to the cabin for some warm coffee before heading out again right at sunrise. So that’s what we did. Lingering with the coffee we went back to the trail head a little after sunrise. I was disappointed to discover that most of the fog had lifted. Nonetheless, we set out on the trail and really couldn’t have asked for a better morning. It was slightly chilly but not so much so that it was uncomfortable. I always like the beginning of this trail. It reminds me of the hikes I did in Washington because of all the moss and the way the mountain laurel trunks curl to make these unique designs.

About an hour or so in we arrived at Wolf Rocks. The view was gorgeous and the sun was giving a reddish glow to the tops of the trees as it tried to poke out from behind the clouds. I envisioned several exposures I wanted to make that day. I was happy with the conditions, it was completely cloudy and the sun wasn’t able to wash out the clouds. I can’t wait to see this view throughout the seasons. We already have another cabin booked so I’ll have my chance again very soon.

Enjoy!
